John studied chemistry at Oxford University, then worked as a software engineer. After becoming involved in a number of community and environmental initiatives (particularly the Derbyshire Alternative Technology Association), he co-founded T4 Sustainability in May 2002 to concentrate on technical Sustainability and Renewable Energy work. Since then, he has worked on a wide variety of sustainability projects for individuals, third sector, local government, commercial and industrial clients.

He is experienced in resource efficiency; cost, energy and carbon reduction; renewable energy systems design and installation; energy and sustainability audit; low energy design; and sustainability advocacy.  He also acts as consultant to the SunGain solar water heating scheme. He is an accredited Carbon Trust Standard assessor (carbon, water and wate standards; mostly working with large corporate clients); is a qualified electrician; and is an ESOS Lead Assessor.

John takes an interest in the Internet Of Things and Infrastructure Control Systems, particularly the problems that arise from the use of Building Management Systems. He has proposed the development of flexible and low cost Open Source alternatives to commercial AMR and BMS offerings, and spoke on this topic at the European Space Agency’s 2015 Infrastructure Symposium in Madrid.

In addition to his work with T4, John serves on the Diocese of Derby Environmental Forum. He has also trained as an Energy Resilience Assessor with Transition Training & Consultancy (TT&C); has chaired the trustees of Energy21, a national energy charity promoting community scale renewable energy, which was linked to Eurosolar (the European Association for Renewable Energy); and has served on the Derby City Partnership’s City Growth Executive and D2N2 LEP Innovation Board.
